Georgia’s special election has thrown up a winner – Donald Trump-backed Republican Clay Fuller.

The run-off in Georgia’s 14th District was held to replace Marjorie Taylor Greene, who had a falling out with US President Donald Trump over the Jeffrey Epstein file scandal.

Fuller defeated Democrat Shawn Harris in the Republican-leaning district. The result yet again underlines Trump’s control of the party.

Who is Clay Fuller?

According to BBC, Fuller is a lieutenant colonel in the Georgia Air National Guard.

Fuller previously served as District Attorney for the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit in northwest Georgia. This encompasses four counties in the northwest part of the state. He was appointed to that position by then Georgia Governor Brian Kemp.

According to his campaign website, Fuller, as a District Attorney, handled serious crimes including murder, rape and armed robbery. He secured multiple life-sentence convictions in jury trials. He argued cases before the Supreme Court of Georgia and the Georgia Court of Appeals.

Military and federal experience

Fuller also served as a Judge Advocate in the US Air Force. He also served as an officer in the Air National Guard

Fuller served in the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Defense during Trump’s first term. His main job was in a DoD office called Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict (SOLIC).

Political stance: Like Trump, he has taken a hard line on illegal immigration and mass deportations.

Education: Fuller attended Emory University in Atlanta before pursuing a master’s degree in public administration at Cornell University.

The opponent

According to The Independent, Harris is a cattle farmer and retired general. He pitched himself as a “dirt-road Democrat” with common sense. He also sought to appeal to Republicans turned off by Trump’s antics.

“He has sold his soul to Donald Trump,” Harris said of Fuller in March. “The reality of it is he cannot fight for you because he cannot go against the president.”

Harris previously challenged Greene for the seat in Georgia in 2024 but lost by a whopping thirty points.

How the election unfolded

Tuesday’s run-off was triggered after no candidates secured an outright majority in a March 10 special election. The 14th is widely considered the most Republican-leaning district in the state of Georgia It encompasses 10 counties from suburban Atlanta to Tennessee.

The win by Fuller gives House Speaker Mike Johnson some breathing space in the House, which is currently controlled by Republicans by a razor-thin margin of 217–214.

Noting that Republicans had to spend time and money on the race, Harris added, “That tells you things are changing.”

Josh McKoon, the chairman of the Georgia Republican Party, also noted aggressive Democratic spending. “All the king’s horses and all the king’s men could not turn northwest Georgia blue,” McKoon told a crowd of more than 200 people who were celebrating Fuller’s victory.

Scott Johnson, 69, a retail banking consultant from Marietta, Georgia, said Harris’ vote tally was higher than he would have liked, wishing this was a clear blowout win for Fuller. “But we got our man in,” he said. “A win is a win.”

The Greene factor

Greene was one of the highest-profile members of the Republican Party and a MAGA firebrand. She promoted Trump’s falsehoods that Biden stole the 2024 election. According to The Independent, a rift appeared after her ambitions to run for senator or governor emerged.

Greene then took on Trump’s foreign policy and his refusal to release the entire Epstein case files. Trump then announced that he would support a primary challenger against Greene. A week later, she announced her resignation from the House.
