In Hawaii, another vulnerable Democratic incumbent survives primary
Rep. Ed Case, D-Hawaii, held off a challenge from a younger and more liberal rival in his state’s Saturday primary.
Case has held the seat since winning it in 2018, but he faced a spirited challenge by state Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole. The contest was seen as a generational and ideological contest among Hawaii Democrats; Keohokalole is younger, and Case has backed some Republican measures in Congress.
But in the end, Case won easily, taking about 60% of the vote.
The 1st District is dominated by Honolulu and fills nearly half of the island of Oahu. With little land left to develop on the southern part of the island, it has been growing less rapidly than the rest of the state. Asian Americans account for half the population in the 1st, nearly double that of the 2nd District, which includes the remainder of the state.
