Iowa Republican Joe Mitchell said his contest for Iowa's 2nd Congressional District is a battle against "the worst of the worst" of the left.

During a campaign rally in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday, Sept. 2, Mitchell, 29 of Clear Lake, railed against Democrats and his opponent, state Rep. Lindsay James, 46, of Dubuque.

Iowa's 2nd Congressional District race has received national attention for its possibility to flip from Republican control. Current 2nd District Republican U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson is vacating her seat for a U.S. Senate run. The Cook Political Report rate the race as "lean Republican."

During the Wednesday rally, Mitchell and former Navy SEAL Robert O'Neill spoke in stark terms about what would happen if Democrats like James win in November. O'Neill was on the team that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, the Al-Qaeda leader behind the 9/11 terrorist attack, and claims to have fired the fatal bullet.

Mitchell said James and other Democrats are "radical left socialists pretending to be moderates." O'Neill said "we are only two generations removed from communism" and called democratic socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani a "jihadist" and a "communist."

Mitchell touts ethics changes at Cedar Rapids rally

Mitchell called for a litany of ethics overhauls for the rules governing federal elected officials.

He vowed he would never take corporate PAC money and claimed to be the only Republican with such a vow.

Mitchell's campaign has accepted donations from an agricultural PAC for CHS, Inc. a farmer's co-op out of Minnesota. He has also taken donations from PAC's related to home building and development.
