Mayor Daniel Biss won the fractured Democratic primary to represent Evanston and other communities in the 9th Congressional District on Tuesday, pulling just under 30% of the vote to defeat 14 opponents and virtually guarantee he will cut his time as Evanston’s mayor short to join the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Associated Press called the race for Biss at 9:36 p.m., and by the end of the night he had 35,642 votes for 29.4% of the total. Content creator Kat Abughazaleh placed second with 31,705 votes for 26.1%, followed by state Sen. Laura Fine (9th District) in third with 24,616 votes for 20.3%.

Further down were state Sen. Mike Simmons with 7.1%, former FBI agent Phil Andrew with 6.2% and Skokie school board member Bushra Amiwala with 5%, with all others scoring under 2% each. These results are still unofficial, as mail ballots can be received and counted through March 31 ahead of final results being certified on April 7.
