NEW IBERIA, La. (NEWS 15) — State Sen. Blake Miguez of New Iberia is running for Congress in Louisiana's newly redrawn 6th District, joining nine other candidates seeking the seat held by U.S. Rep. Cleo Fields.
Miguez had initially planned to run for the 5th District seat in northern Louisiana, which is held by U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow, who is now the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate.
Miguez had President Donald Trump's endorsement in the 5th District race before changing his plans.
The 6th District was redrawn after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling, shifting it from Democratic-leaning to Republican-leaning, according to the information provided.
Miguez's decision came ahead of the filing deadline. He is now one of 10 candidates seeking the seat.
