US Representative Ilhan Omar won the Democratic primary for Minnesota's 5th Congressional District on Tuesday by a commanding margin, according to projections from American media outlets, securing her position as the party's nominee for a fifth term in the Minneapolis-centered seat. The four-term congresswoman captured more than 80 percent of the vote with over 95 percent of ballots counted, according to CBS News.
Unofficial results showed Omar leading with 122,640 votes, placing her far ahead of her nearest competitor, according to the New York Times. The decisive win positions her to defend the seat in the upcoming general election.
Omar's opponents in the Democratic contest included Julie Trang Le, a former federal prosecutor who received 10,201 votes, and Latonya T. Reeves, who garnered 9,131 votes.
