CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A deadline is quickly approaching for critical funding that keeps North Carolina’s roads and rails moving.
The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is set to expire Sept. 30. The 2021 law supports much of the nation’s transportation projects, and with just over two months left, Congress is now debating its replacement.
In May, the House Transportation and Infrastructure committee approved the BUILD America 250 Act on a bipartisan vote. The bill is a five-year, roughly $580 billion plan that would replace the 2021 infrastructure law with a new framework.
For North Carolina drivers, the bill promises two things: better roads and projects that finish faster. But it’s also drawing concerns from critics who say it comes at the expense of transit, passenger rail, and electric vehicle owners.
