Rep. Rob Menendez (D) fended off a spirited challenge from Mussab Ali in Tuesday’s Democratic primary in the 8th Congressional District, the Associated Press projects.
Menendez’s primary win all but secures him a third term in Congress in this district, a heavily Democratic area where there will be no Republican challenger on the ballot in November. Menendez may face a handful of third-party challengers.
Ali, a former Jersey City Board of Education president who ran on a platform of abolishing ICE and halting military aid to Israel, had argued Menendez was too moderate for the district.
Both men have made high-profile visits to the Delaney Hall migrant jail in Newark in recent days as detainees and their loved ones have protested poor conditions inside the detention center.
