Rep. LaMonica McIver, a Democrat who is facing federal assault charges for a May 2025 episode outside Newark migrant jail Delaney Hall, easily weathered a primary challenge in the 10th Congressional District Tuesday, the Associated Press projects.

McIver defeated consultant Lawrence Poster, and she will now face Republican Carmen Bucco as she seeks a second term in Congress in November.

McIver was accused by federal prosecutors last year with pushing federal officers as they arrested Mayor Ras Baraka outside Delaney Hall. When prosecutors dropped the trespassing charge against Baraka, they hit McIver with the assault charges.

She is scheduled to appear before a federal appeals court later this month in her move to have the charges thrown out before trial. McIver has pleaded not guilty.
