Southern New Mexico's 2nd District primary: Vasquez unopposed as GOP race tilts Cunningham
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KFOX14/CBS4) — Early results from New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District primary elections show incumbent Democrat Gabriel Vasquez running unopposed in his party’s contest, while Republicans faced a competitive two-candidate race to determine their nominee.
With all 190 precincts partially reporting, Vasquez received 100% of the Democratic vote, totaling 8,881 ballots. His uncontested primary victory clears the path for a reelection bid in November, where he will face the Republican nominee.
On the Republican side, Gregory G. Cunningham holds a strong lead with 84% of the vote, totaling 2,899 ballots.
Challenger Jose Orozco trails with 16%, receiving 543 votes. While results remain unofficial, Cunningham’s sizable margin positions him as the likely Republican nominee for the general election.
The 2nd Congressional District, which covers a large portion of southern New Mexico, is expected to remain competitive in the general election.
