Water contamination assistance offered after two New Mexico disasters

The USDA is offering funding to people who had their water contaminated by the Hermits Peak Calf Canyon Fire and Chaves County flooding

The USDA is offering funding to people who had their water contaminated by the Hermits Peak Calf Canyon Fire and Chaves County flooding

New Mexico residents whose drinking water supplies were contaminated as a result of recent wildfires and flooding disasters may be eligible for financial assistance to repair water systems or install treatment equipment through a federal grant program.

This includes the 2022 Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon Fire and several major flooding and wildfire events that occurred in 2024.

Assistance is available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Single Family Housing Disaster Grant program.

Officials said homeowners in Mora County and throughout areas affected by the Hermits Peak burn scar may qualify if fire-related contamination impacted their water supply. Residents in Chaves County who experienced cont…
