LaLota Looks To Defend 1st District Seat in U.S. House of Representatives
U.S. Representative Nick LaLota is seeking to defend his hold on New York’s 1st Congressional District seat against a challenge from Democrat Christopher Gallant in November’s election and secure a third term.
A lifelong Long Islander, LaLota attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis after he graduated from St. Anthony’s High School in Huntington. With the U.S. Navy, LaLota completed overseas deployments in 2001, 2003 and 2005, mostly serving in Southeast Asia.
LaLota, a Republican, was elected to Congress in 2022. He defended his seat two years later against Democratic challenger John Avlon. The final tally was 226,285 to 183,540, or 55.2 percent to 44.8 percent.
This year he is faced with a challenge from political newcomer and fellow military veteran Christopher Gallant, a Democrat who emerged victorious in a primary election in June and who is optimistic about his chances of flipping a district he considers “purple” — despite Republican dominance since 2015.
