Mamdani’s Moment: New York Primary Postmortem
Mamdani’s congressional slate of three won their races, while the DSA posted considerable gains in the New York legislature.
In New York’s 7th, 10th, and 13th congressional districts, Mamdani-backed candidates defeated a mix of centrist incumbents and established voices, while several districts in the state legislature saw incumbents fall to progressive challengers.
The early vote pointed to a potentially close contest between Mamdani-backed socialist Claire Valdez and progressive Antonio Reynoso, backed by outgoing Rep. Nydia Velázquez. But Valdez won the Election Day vote decisively, despite favorable turnout for Reynoso among the Satmar Hasidic community.
Valdez’s 20 point win was fueled by a strong performance among the same groups that gave Mamdani a 41-point general election victory in the district.
