It’s almost impossible now to find a traditional August congressional recess townhall in which a senator or representative hosts an in-person, open-microphone, no-holds-barred, on-the-record, question-and-answer session that allows constituents to give him or her an earful of praise or scorching criticism.
Only 11 members of Congress thus far are hosting townhalls this month, compared with the much higher rates of these events in previous years, according to LegiStorm. In years past, August was the most intensive month of the entire year for townhalls.
Rep. Josh Brecheen (R-Okla.) told The Washington Stand that he is hosting a full schedule of 15 in-person townhalls in his district, which includes the eastern-most third of the state and stretches from the Kansas border in the North to the Red River and Texas on the Southern edge.
