Nelson beats Martin in CD 5, Hern wins Senate nomination, incumbents easily advance
Educator Jena Nelson secured the Democratic nomination for Oklahoma’s 5th Congressional District, while incumbent members of the state’s congressional delegation cruised to primary victories Tuesday.
Nelson defeated union president Trey Martin with 56.7 percent support (26,872 votes) to 43.3 percent (20,485 votes). Nelson, a former public school teacher who won Oklahoma Teacher of the Year in 2020, launched her campaign nearly a year before Martin entered the race. But the union member gained a national attention-grabbing endorsement from U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
“CD-5’s working families deserve someone who will fight for their best interests in Congress, not the best interests of their billionaire financiers,” Nelson wrote in a statement Tuesday.
Nelson will face incumbent U.S. Rep. Stephanie Bice (R-OK5) and independents Robert P. Henri and Austin Nieves in the Nov. 3 general election. Bice, first elected in 2020, did not draw a primary opponent.
