Could Burchett’s surveillance bill impact Tennessee police? Mt. Juliet says not Flock

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — A bill introduced by Tennessee Congressman Tim Burchett would limit how certain federal funds can be used for automated surveillance technology, including some automated license plate reader (ALPR) systems.

Supporters of the proposal say it would better protect privacy and limit government surveillance. Critics, including many in law enforcement, argue the technology is an important tool for solving crimes and locating wanted suspects.

To see what the proposal could mean locally, FOX 17 News reached out to the Mt. Juliet Police Department, which uses Flock Safety license plate reader cameras throughout the city.

Police told FOX 17 their Flock system was not purchased using federal grant funding. Because of that, the department does not expect Congressman Burchett’s proposal to impact its current or future use of the technology.
