Midterm elections will look a little different for some parts of Tennessee after a new congressional district map was drawn by the Tennessee General Assembly and signed into fruition by Governor Bill Lee on Thursday.
The move comes after the 2026 Supreme Court decision in the Louisiana v. Callais case where Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act was weakened. During the special session held by the Tennessee General Assembly this month, it both amended the Tennessee state law preventing the changing of maps between census adjustments and altered the congressional map.
This decision came about in an argument for what supporters of the map insist is fairness by blending rural and urban populations, while those in opposition insist it is racially biased in its targeting of Memphis, where 51-53% of the population is Black, making it the county with the highest density of Black vote…
