Thurman Bartie wins Democratic nod in Texas’ 14th District congressional race
Former Port Arthur Mayor Thurman Bartie clinched a narrow victory after midnight to win the Democratic nomination in the Congressional District 14 race, setting up a November matchup against incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Randy Weber.
Bartie defeated Richard Davis by about 2 percentage points, a margin of a little more than 200 votes. The final results came in after midnight.
With the runoff decided Tuesday night, Bartie said he is already turning his attention to what he expects will be a difficult general election in a district Republicans have long controlled. “Running against what I would say is in the incumbent is not a task for a weak individual. It’s not a task for an unprepared individual. I am neither,” Bartie said.
Bartie said his experience leading Port Arthur prepared him for a congressional campaign. “My educational preparation, my political preparation, my administrative preparation, my managerial preparation, my personal preparation has been ready for this,” he said.
