Former Yankees slugger sounds alarm after Mamdani-backed socialists win primaries
Former Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira may be running for congress in Texas, but that didn’t stop him from bashing the results of New York City’s primary elections.
After learning that three of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s candidates won their districts on Tuesday, the former three-time Silver Slugger took to social media to share his thoughts.
“All three of Zohran Mamdani’s candidates won their primaries last night — and all three are socialists,“ Teixeira said in a poste shared on X. ”This failed ideology is wrapped in empty promises, but delivers bigger government, less freedom, and fewer opportunities. We can’t afford to let this movement spread any further."
Tuesday’s New York City primary elections resulted in a sweep for the city’s democratic socialist movement, solidifying Mamdani’s standing as a leading force in the city’s democratic socialist movement.
In the night’s biggest upset, Mamdani-backed doctoral student and community organizer Darializa Avila Chevalier unseated five-term incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the 13th Congressional District.
Former city comptroller Brad Lander comfortably defeat two-term incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman in the 10th District following sharp divisions over U.S. policy toward Israel, while state Assembly member Claire Valdez won the nomination for the 7th District to succeed retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez.
On Aug. 28, 2025, Teixeira announced that he’d be running in Texas’s 21st Congressional District, where Rep. Chip Roy will not seek re-election as he runs for Texas Attorney General.
Teixeira is a Maryland native who currently lives in the Austin area. He spent the first four-plus years of his major-league career with the Texas Rangers.
The three-time All-Star concluded his career with eight years on the Yankees, winning a World Series in 2009.
Teixeira retired in 2016 after a 14-year career in which he hit .268 with a .869 OPS and 409 home runs.
