Elaine Luria wins Democratic nomination for Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District

Democrat Elaine Luria will fight to get her old seat back against Republican Rep. Jen Kiggans in the 2nd Congressional District after earning the party’s nomination Tuesday night.

She beat out candidates Nila Devanath, Bill Fleming and Patrick Mosolf. As of Tuesday evening, Devanath had about 16% of the vote; Fleming had about 2% and Mosolf had a little over 1%.

Luria previously served in Congress from 2019 to 2023. November’s general election will be a rematch for her and Kiggans. The general election is Nov. 3.

Luria gathered with supporters Tuesday night at a Virginia Beach restaurant to await the election results.

“As I stand up here tonight, it seems eerily familiar to when I stood here in 2018 to accept the nomination,” she said, referencing the year she went on to topple Republican incumbent Scott Taylor to represent the district.

Redistricting in 2020 gave the 2nd District a Republican lean however, and Luria lost the seat to Kiggans in 2022.
