Joy Powers wins Democratic primary in Virginia's 9th Congressional District
(WSET) — Joy Powers has won the Democratic primary in Virginia's 9th Congressional District and is now turning her focus to the general election in November.
The 9th District Democratic primary was called later than most races, but Powers said the wait was worth it.
After months of campaigning across the district, Powers said she saw strong turnout, including many first-time Democratic primary voters.
She believes it's an encouraging sign heading into the fall.
Powers said her campaign will take a realistic approach to competing against Republican incumbent Morgan Griffith.

"This is a district considered ruby red. Well, I challenge that. I say that we have to show up, and we have to offer them a campaign that's not about Democratic principles, but really focuses on what can be delivered here at home," Powers said.
Powers defeated two other Democratic candidates on the ballot, Adam Murphy and Douglas Crockett.
