Virginia — 9th District

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Following Jennifer McClellan’s win in the Feb. 21 special election for the 4th District U.S. House seat, the 9th Senate District seat in Virginia will soon be vacant.

A date for that special election has now been set for Tuesday, March 28.

The district includes parts of of the city of Richmond, Hanover County and Henrico County, and all of Charles City County.

PICKING A CANDIDATE

Democrats announced on Feb. 22 that a “firehouse primary” will be held on Sunday, Feb. 26 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. to pick a candidate in the following locations:

IBEW 666 - 1400 E Nine Mile Road, Highland Springs

Ashland Municipal Building - 121 Thompson St., Ashland

Charles City County Administration Building - 10900 Courthouse Rd, Charles City

East Henrico Government Center - 3820 Nine Mile Road, Richmond

Virginia Union University Living and Learning Center - 1500 N. Lombardy St., Richmond

Candidates must submit a $2,500 filing fee and signatures from 50 registered voters in the 9th Senate District to be on the primary ballot.

That and other paperwork are due to the Nominating Committee by 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24.

The Republican Party of Virginia will also be holding its party canvas on Sunday from noon until 2 p.m. at 3429 West Cary St. in Richmond.

The party said it heard from several people who are interested in running but none have made a firm decision yet.

Those interested in running have until noon Saturday to submit a written statement by hand to 3429 West Cary St.

WHO’S RUNNING?

State Del. Lemont Bagby, a Democrat, announced on Feb. 22 that he was running for the seat. Bagby served on the Henrico County School Board for eight years and has been in the Virginia House of Delegates for seven years.

State Del. Dawn Adams is a nurse practitioner, who was first elected to represent House District 68 in 2017 and is currently in her third term. She was the first Democrat elected to represent the district in three decades, and is also a small business owner.

Alexsis Rogers is a civic leader who says she dedicated her life to serving the community in Richmond and Central Virginia where she grew up, and also helped organize the 4th Congressional District Firehouse Primary.

VOTING TIMELINE

The Richmond Office of Elections provided a timeline for this election for registration and early voting information:

March 17: Deadline to apply for mail ballot

March 18: First Saturday of early voting

March 21: Registration deadline

March 25: Last day of early voting

March 28: Special election for in-person voting
