Senate rejects Iran War Powers resolution 49

WASHINGTON — The Republican-controlled U.S. Senate on Thursday voted 49-50 against directing President Donald Trump to end military hostilities with Iran.

Ohio’s Republican U.S. Senators - Bernie Moreno and Jon Husted - voted with the majority of their party against a War Powers resolution that the U.S. House of Representatives approved in July.

Republicans Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Thom Tillis of North Carolina backed the resolution. Pennsylvania’s Sen. John Fetterman was the only Democrat to vote against it. Democratic Sen. Angela Alsobrooks of Maryland did not vote.

Husted hasn’t backed any of the War Powers resolution votes that aim to pressure Trump to end the war. War Powers resolution. Earlier this week, he told Politico the war “needs to come to an end as quickly as possible” to bring down gas prices. But he also says he wants Trump to reach a deal with Iran.

“America can’t look weak, or we will get a worse deal rather than a better one,” Husted told Spectrum News over the summer.

Moreno has taken the same line. He told the Statehouse News Bureau on Tuesday that “At the end of the day, we all want this to end.”

Moreno has also said he wants the war to end on Trump’s terms

“We’ve been in a war with Iran for 47 years,” he told Politico at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas. “President Trump’s the one who’s finally finishing it.”
