Republican Michael Bouchard Jr. and Democrat Christina Bertrand Hines won their primary races Tuesday according to unofficial vote totals Tuesday night. They will face each other in the Nov. 3 general election for the U.S. District 10 House seat.

District 10 includes parts Macomb and Oakland counties, include portions of Rochester Hills, Harrison Township, Eastpointe, Sterling Heights and Warren. The district leans conservative, according to the Cook Political Report.

The candidates want to succeed U.S. Rep. John James, who is running for the Michigan governor’s seat.

Bouchard, a U.S. Army captain who transitioned from active duty to the Michigan Army National Guard, received 28,165 total votes in the Republican primary, followed by attorney Justin Kirk (6,827), attorney Robert Lulgjuraj (2,113) and construction manager and U.S. Army veteran Steffan Demetropoulos (1,451).

Lulgjuraj withdrew from the race after President Donald Trump endorsed Bouchard, but it was too late to remove his name from the ballot.

“I want to thank the voters of the 10th District for putting their faith in me,” Bouchard said in a statement texted to MLive. “They didn’t vote for a candidate -– they voted for a mission.”

He said his campaign would emphasize rebuilding Michigan manufacturing, keeping families safe and putting District 10 first.

Bouchard praised his Republican opponents for pursuing “something bigger than themselves, and that deserves respect.”

He said he expected them to join him in holding onto the District 10 seat.

Former assistant prosecuting attorney Christina Bertrand Hines received 26,304 votes in the Democratic primary, followed by attorney Eric Chung (18,247) and attorney and former Pontiac Mayor Tim Greimel (13,500).

Hines has been endorsed by Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham, Macomb County Commissioners Sarah Lucido, Antoinette Wallace and Michael Howard, State Sens. Veronica Klinefelt, Stephanie Change and Rosemary Bayer, former Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer and State Reps. Mike McFall and Veronica Paiz, among others.

Hines and her husband David have three young children. She has campaigned in support of universal health care, getting money out of politics and lowering costs for families.

Here’s the breakdown of votes per county for each candidate:

Bouchard: 19,533 Macomb, 8,632 Oakland

Hines: 20,925 in Macomb County, 5,379 in Oakland County

Chung: 14,119 Macomb, 4,128 Oakland

Greimel: 7,851 Macomb, 5,643 Oakland

Kirk: 6,286 Macomb, 541 Oakland

Lulgjuraj: 1,739 Macomb, 374 Oakland

Demetropoulos: 1,159 Macomb, 292 Oakland

In addition to the nod from Trump, Bouchard has been endorsed by U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson, the House speaker; House Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise; Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido, and the Police Officers Association of Michigan, among others.

Bouchard’s campaign may benefit from name recognition, as his father is longtime Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, a former state representative.

Trump’s approval ratings may affect the Nov. 3 general election outcome. The most recent figures from nearly a dozen polling organization show an overall negative view, with approval ratings ranging from 32% per Quinnipiac University’s most-recent poll to 46% by RMG Research. Trump has dismissed the low ratings, calling them fake.

Voter turnout in Oakland County was relatively high for a primary: 382,162 cast ballots, or more than 36% of the county’s more than 1 million registered voters. The ballot included a countywide school millage and a wide range of municipal ballot proposals. Votes were still being counted by Oakland County Clerk’s office at 2 a.m. Wednesday.
