Candidate who dropped out wins GOP primary in Michigan's 8th congressional district
Voters in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District delivered a surprising result in Tuesday’s Republican primary, electing Thomas Smith as the party’s nominee despite him ending his campaign weeks before Election Day.
Smith, an engineer and local entrepreneur, defeated President Donald Trump-endorsed candidate Amir Hassan, earning about 50% of the vote compared to Hassan’s 33%. Al Lemmo finished third with approximately 16%.
The result had raised questions about what happens next, since Smith announced in mid-July he was ending his campaign.
But Smith in a statement on Wednesday said, “I am humbled and honored that Republicans have chosen me to take the fight to Kristen McDonald Rivet. I look forward to working with Speaker Johnson and the entire Republican team to expand our House majority and advance President Trump’s America First agenda to lower costs for working families and make America affordable again.”
