Sylvia Garcia withstands Democratic primary challenge in redrawn 29th Congressional District

In November, Garcia will face off against the Republican nominee, Martha Fierro, who ran unopposed in Tuesday’s primary election.

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia handily won Tuesday’s Democratic primary race in the 29th Congressional District, despite the Houston district being redrawn by the state’s Republican lawmakers last year.

Garcia received 58.2% of the vote on Election Day, defeating Democratic challengers Jarvis Johnson, who received 35.7%, and Robert Slater, who received 6%, according to complete but unofficial results from the Texas Secretary of State’s Office.

In a statement on social media early Wednesday morning, Garcia said she is deeply grateful for the opportunity to continue representing the people of the 29th District.
